Yes I think there's a reference to Rastafari/reggae lore too, also
because many people in Zion have dreadlocks. Perhaps also a reference
to Neuromancer, like there are many references throughout the film
to works of literature, like the Bible, Brave new World, 1984, Alice
in Wonderland/through the Looking Glass, Simulations and Simulacra,
to name some obvious ones.

While I have never heard Zion used to refer specifially to Jeruselam,
my understanding was that it meant Israel. Shrug. Anyway.. as I have
stated before. Zion has become interwoven in the fabric of western
society to symbolize utopia. Not dissimilar to say shangrila of easter
cultures.
